Heróis do Mar was a Portuguese new wave and pop rock band from Lisbon, formed in 1980 by Pedro Ayres Magalhães and former members of Corpo Diplomático. The group's name was derived from the first words of Portugal's national anthem, A Portuguesa. The ensemble gained attention with its avant-garde pop music and stylized performances. Their breakthrough came in 1982 when the single “Amor” achieved platinum status, making them the first Portuguese band to receive a gold record. They performed internationally, notably supporting Roxy Music in Paris in 1982. Acclaim grew with the release of the single “Paixão” (1983), leading publications such as The Face and Actuel to name them the best band in Europe. The group's success continued with the albums Mãe (1983) and Macau (1986). After a final concert in October 1989, the band ceased activity in 1990. Their work was later celebrated with the documentary Dança Brava (2007) and a comprehensive box set in 2011.
