John Twells, known professionally as Xela, is a British electronic musician from Walsall. Based in Berlin, Twells founded the record label Type Records. The early musical style of the project combined constructed beats, melodies, and electronica, as heard on the albums For Frosty Mornings and Summer Nights (2003) and Tangled Wool (2004). A growing interest in horror soundtracks influenced a transition toward atmospheric soundscapes of folk, drone, and psychedelia, beginning with the album The Dead Sea (2006). Subsequent releases include Heirs of the Fire (2008), Never, Better (2008), and In Bocca al Lupo (2008), the latter incorporating doom and noise elements. Later solo works include The Divine (2009), The Sublime (2010), My Memories of Gallifrey (2011), and Exorcism (2011). Twells also recorded the collaborative album Twells and Christensen with musician Matt Christiansen.
