Phantasia began in the 70s as a music institute project. Professor Ryo Kobayashi recognized a connection among three of his students, Takashi Yamada (guitar), Hiroshi Nakamura (bass), and Shun Tanaka (drums). Together, they formed a jazz band. Partnering with Zodiac Records, their debut trilogy, The Jaguar’s Journey, captured their Afro-jazz inspired beginnings. In 1976, Kobayashi stepped back, leaving the band to explore new directions.
As a trio, Phantasia delved into jazz fusion, with Yamada experimenting with keyboards, Nakamura with saxophone, and Tanaka refining complex rhythms. This phase culminated in the creation of the Starborn Metamorphosis Trilogy, a series of albums where they infused their jazz roots with electronic funk and disco influences.
The 80s brought their iconic lineup with the integration of Keiko Arai (piano) and Akira Matsuda (saxophone). Matsuda’s visuals redefined the band’s identity, merging their divine iconography with futuristic aesthetics. During this phase, the band embraced a sound deeply rooted in the Japanese jazz fusion movement of the time, starting with Future Angels and paving the way for their masterwork, Dream Collector.
In 1991 the band embraced a new chapter with Reincarnation, marking their independence through the founding of Phantasia Records. This period saw them reinventing their earlier works, infusing electronic textures and crafting reimagined versions of their classic material.
