María de los Ángeles Rodríguez Fernández, known professionally as Gelu, was born on February 12, 1945, in Granada, Spain. She began her career as a singer and gained initial recognition by winning the Música al azar contest on Radio Granada in 1958. Following this victory, she moved to Madrid and then Barcelona, where she signed with La Voz de su Amo and released her first successful singles "Los gitanos" and "Después de seis tequilas". Gelu's career flourished in the early 1960s with hits like "Siempre es domingo", "Carnavalito gitano", and versions of Petula Clark songs such as "Downtown" and "Colour My World". In 1963, she achieved significant success with her rendition of Rita Pavone's "La partita di pallone" in Spanish, accompanied by Los Mustang. Gelu embarked on six successful tours across America and earned three gold records. She retired from music in 1968.
