Hour of Penance, a death metal band from Rome, Italy, was formed in 1999 by Mike Viti, Enrico Schettino, and Mauro Mercurio. Initially a black/death-metal cover band, they shifted to brutal death metal after the release of Bloodthirst by Cannibal Corpse. Their first demo, released in 2000, garnered international attention. In 2003, Hour of Penance released their debut album, Disturbance, through the Spanish label Xtreem Music. The band underwent several lineup changes, including the addition of Giulio Moschini on guitar and Alex 'Necrotorture' Manco on vocals for subsequent albums like Pageantry For Martyrs (2005) and The Vile Conception (2008). Notable tours included a European trek with Krisiun in 2006. In 2010, they released Paradogma, followed by Sedition in 2012 under Prosthetic Records. The band's music is characterized by its complexity and speed, with lyrics often focusing on religious criticism and political-philosophical themes.
