José Ángel Lomio, known professionally as Ángel Vargas, was born in Barracas, Buenos Aires, on October 22, 1904. He began singing in the 1930s with Augusto Pedro Berto’s orchestra under the pseudonym Carlos Vargas, later meeting pianist Ángel D'Agostino and forming a duo. In 1940 Vargas joined D'Agostino’s orchestra and recorded 93 tracks for RCA Victor, including "Muchacho" and "No aflojés", cementing his reputation in Argentine tango. He also appeared in the film Su última pelea (1949). He later led his own orchestra with Luis Stazo and José Libertella, and embarked on a solo career collaborating with Eduardo Del Piano and Armando Lacava. His final recording session occurred on June 16, 1959, when he recorded "La cieguita" and "La porteñita" with the orchestra of José Libertella. He died on July 7, 1959, at the age of 54, following complications after a lung-removal surgery.
