Arts and Decay, formed in 1988 in Kaiserslautern, Germany, emerged from a punk and dark‑wave milieu, employing a drum machine to craft a gothic‑rock sound. Their early releases included the single "High Over Red / Sick Of It All" and the 1989 album Stone Talk. The band’s breakthrough came with the track "Mescal" featured on the German Mystic Sound Sampler – Volume II, followed by the concept album Shadowjesus in 1993 under Hypnobeat/BSC Music, which positioned them within the underground scene.
