Denis Matthews

Denis Matthews was an English pianist and musicologist who was born in 1919. He achieved early professional recognition after his debut in 1939 and is famous for his interpretation of the works of Mozart and Beethoven. During World War II, he served with the RAF (1940–1946) and recorded Beethoven’s Horn Sonate (1944) with the hornist Dennis Brain. Following the war, Matthews toured extensively as a concert pianist and established partnerships with the Griller Quartet and the Amadeus Quartet. His discography includes recordings of modern British music and the Proms premiere of Edmund Rubbra’s Piano Concerto (1956). Between 1971 and 1984, he was the Professor of Music at Newcastle University. He authored several books, including his autobiography In Pursuit of Music (1966) and a study of Beethoven (1985). Matthews died in 1988.
