Universal Indicator was the collaborative acid techno project of record producers Richard D. James, who used the alias Martin Tressider, and Mike Dred, also known as The Kosmik Kommando. Their first releases appeared in 1992 on Rephlex Records, with the EP Blue (catalogue number TB-303) and the EP Red (catalogue number TR-606), establishing a signature acid techno sound that defined their color-themed catalog. Subsequent releases included the EP Yellow (1993, catalogue number MC-202) and the EP Green (1995, catalogue number SH-101), followed by the full-length DJ-mix CD Innovation in the Dynamics of Acid in 2001, which was compiled by Dred. The duo's work also included the 12-inch vinyl Universal Indicator 5 (Ultra-Violet), released in 2001 on the Beta Bodega label under Dred's Kosmik Kommando alias.
