Vassil Ivanov Kazandjiev, born on September 10, 1934, in Ruse, Kingdom of Bulgaria, is a Bulgarian composer and conductor. He started playing guitar at seven, piano at nine, and composing music by ten. In 1957, Kazandjiev graduated from the Bulgarian State Conservatory, winning a prize for his Symphonietta at the Sixth International Youth Festival in Moscow. He began conducting at the Sofia Opera, and in 1962, he founded the Sofia Soloists Chamber Ensemble, leading successful concerts worldwide. From 1979 to 1993, Kazandjiev served as chief conductor of the Bulgarian National Radio. His compositions include several symphonies and chamber works like Pictures from Bulgaria. He was also a professor at Pancho Vladiguerov National Academy of Music and elected a member of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in 2005.
