Peter Kooij, also known as Peter Kooy, was born on September 17, 1954, in Soest, Netherlands. He is a Dutch bass singer specializing in Baroque repertoire. He began his musical career at age six as a sopranist in a children's choir and later studied the violin before returning to vocal training under Max van Egmond at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam, where he earned his soloist diploma. Kooij's international career began in 1981 when he joined La Chapelle Royale and Collegium Vocale Gent under Philippe Herreweghe, performing works by Jean-Sébastien Bach and other composers. Notable recordings from this period include Matthäus Passion BWV 244. In the late 1990s, Kooy collaborated with Masaaki Suzuki on the complete recording of Bach's cantatas with the Bach Collegium Japan. He has taught at the Conservatory of Amsterdam and the Tokyo University of Fine Arts and Music.
