The Free Design was an American pop ensemble from Delevan established in 1967. The group consisted of the musicians Chris Dedrick, Sandy Dedrick, Bruce Dedrick, Ellen Dedrick, and Stefanie Dedrick. They achieved professional recognition for a musical style characterized by sunshine pop and baroque pop. The ensemble was founded by the musicians C. Dedrick, S. Dedrick, and B. Dedrick while living in New York City. Their recording career began with the debut studio recording Kites Are Fun (1967) and the song “Kites Are Fun” (1967). The Free Design achieved professional recognition for the studio recording You Could Be Born Again (1968) and the studio recording Stars / Time / Bubbles / Love (1970). Their discography included the studio recording ...Sing for Very Important People (1970) and the studio recording One By One (1971). The ensemble achieved professional recognition for the studio recording There is a Song (1972) released on the label Ambrotype Records. The group became inactive in 1972 but resumed activity in 2000. They achieved professional recognition for recording a cover of the song “Endless Harmony” for a tribute to the ensemble The Beach Boys. Their recording career included the studio recording Cosmic Peekaboo (2001) and the remix recording The Now Sound Redesigned (2005). The musician Stefanie Dedrick died on April 5, 1999. The musician Chris Dedrick died on August 6, 2010.
