Håkan Broström, born in 1955 in Motala, Sweden, is a Swedish saxophonist who began playing the piano at age eight and later took up the tenor saxophone and flute. In the early 1970s, he moved to Malmö to study at the local music college under Helge Albin. Broström co-founded his first group, Equinox, with Tomas Franck during this period. He has led several quartets, collaborating with notable musicians such as Bobo Stenson and Esbjörn Svensson. As a sideman, he worked with artists like Eje Thelin and Ulf Wakenius. From 1993 to 2023, Broström freelanced with the Norrbotten Big Band, writing arrangements for artists including Dee Dee Bridgewater and Dave Liebman. His albums include Dark Light (1991), Celestial Nights (1994), and Episodes from the Future and the Past (2014). Broström also formed his own big band, the New Places Orchestra, and collaborated with Swedish artists like Viktoria Tolstoy and Ebbot Lundberg.
