The Smoke, an English psychedelic pop group, was formed in 1965 in York, United Kingdom, originally performing as the Moonshots and the Shots before adopting the name the Smoke. Their biggest hit, “My Friend Jack” (1967), reached number 45 on the UK Singles Chart and was banned in the United Kingdom and the United States for its drug references, but achieved underground popularity, peaking at number 2 in Germany. The same year, the band issued the single “If the Weather's Sunny” (1967) and the EP My Friend Jack, as well as their only studio album, It's Smoke Time (1967), which was exclusive to the German market. The group left Columbia Records in August 1967 to sign with Island Records, and eventually disbanded in 1976.
