He began his musical journey with early training under Guillermo Iscla and Carlos Guastavino. Calandrelli's career took off as he performed with his quintet across Europe before returning to Buenos Aires to support major artists in their tours and negotiations. In 1978, he moved to the United States, where he continued his work as a pianist, arranger, and director. His collaborations include notable figures such as Tony Bennett, Céline Dion, and Barbra Streisand. Calandrelli's compositions and arrangements have been featured in films like The Color Purple (1985) and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), earning him Oscar nominations in 1986 and 2001.
