Hostsonaten, a progressive rock project founded in 1996 in Genoa, Italy, was initiated by Fabio Zuffanti. The band is named after Ingmar Bergman's film drama Höstsonaten. Hostsonaten's style is characterized as symphonic prog, comparable to early Genesis. Initially, the group consisted of members from Zuffanti's main band Finisterre and various guest musicians.
Hostsonaten released their debut album Höstsonaten in 1997 under Mellow Records, initially titled Finisterre Project. The following year saw the release of Mirrorgames, also on Mellow Records. In 2002, they signed with AMS Records and released Spring Song, marking the beginning of their Seasons Cycle Suite, a series of albums themed around the seasons. Subsequent releases included Winterthrough (2008), Autumn Symphony (2009), and Summereve (2011). In 2012, they released The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner: Chapter One, followed by a live album in 2013.
