Monofader, a future pop duo from Norway, was formed in 2001 by Richard Bjørklund and Sebastian Komor. Initially known as Off:Tribe, they released their first demo featuring the song "Solid Ground (v.2.0)" which received positive feedback. In December 2003, while Bjørklund was touring with his band Spektralized, he signed Monofader to Infacted Recordings. Their debut album Frost was released on May 18, 2004, through Infacted in Europe and Metropolis Records in the US. Following the release, Komor moved to Canada, which slowed down the production of new material. By 2008, Komor mentioned that newer material existed under the speculative title Everything Changes but the Sea, but it was not prioritized at the time.
