Isaac Karabtchevsky, a Brazilian conductor of Russian-Jewish ancestry, was born on December 27, 1934, in São Paulo. He studied music and conducting in Germany under notable instructors, including Wolfgang Fortner, Pierre Boulez, and Carl Ueter. Karabtchevsky's career began with his appointment as the conductor of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra in Rio de Janeiro from 1969 to 1996. From 1988 to 1994, he served as principal conductor of the Tonkünstler Orchestra in Vienna. He later held the position of music director at Teatro La Fenice in Venice from 1995 to 2001 and was artistic director of the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra since 2003. Karabtchevsky also led the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire from 2004 to 2009, and he has been the music director of the Petrobras Symphony in Brazil.
