The Flatmates is a British indie pop band formed in 1985 in Bristol, England, by guitarist and main songwriter Martin Whitehead and vocalist Debbie Haynes. The group's initial lineup also included bassist Kath Beach and drummer Rocker. Their early singles, including “I Could Be in Heaven” (1986) and “Happy All the Time” (1987), established them within the indie pop scene. After a series of lineup changes, they released “Shimmer” in March 1988, which became their biggest hit, peaking at number 2 on the UK Indie Chart. The band disbanded in April 1989 before releasing a proper studio album. Following their split, their early material was compiled on the release Love and Death (1989). A second compilation, Potpourri (Hits, Mixes and Demos '85 - '89), was released in 2005. Whitehead reformed the band in 2013 with new vocalist Lisa Bouvier, releasing the single “You Held My Heart” (2013). The group's self-titled debut studio album, The Flatmates, was released in March 2020.
