The Breathing Process, an American deathcore band formed in 2003, was among the first to blend symphonic elements into their music. They released three EPs before signing with Siege of Amida Records and debuting with In Waking: Divinity in 2007. The album showcased a shift from metalcore to blackened death metal. In April 2008, the band's touring van was destroyed in a fire. They resumed touring in March 2009 and released their second full-length album Odyssey (un)Dead in 2010. After several years of inactivity, they returned with Samsara in 2018, followed by Labyrinthian in 2021, under Unique Leader Records. The latter album featured guest vocals from David Simonich and Jamie Graham. In 2023, they released the EP Todeskrone.
