Powder was a Britpop group formed in the United Kingdom in 1994, fronted by vocalist Pearl Lowe. The band’s early lineup included guitarist Mark Thomas, bassist Tim McTighe, and drummer James Walden. Their breakthrough came with the single "20th Century Gods", released on Parkway Records in 1995, which sold out its initial pressing of 1,500 copies within two days and became a Select Single Of The Month. Following this, "Afrodisiac" was issued in June 1995, reaching number 72 on the UK Singles Chart, after which the band appeared at music festivals and the prime‑time BBC music special, Britpop Now. The group’s final single, "Deep Fried", was released in 1995 and peaked at number 82 on the UK chart. After Lowe’s pregnancy and subsequent touring hiatus, Powder disbanded in spring 1996 due to musical differences between Lowe and Thomas. A compilation, MCMXCV, was issued in Japan in 1997. Following the split, Lowe became the frontwoman for Lodger and released a solo album, while Thomas joined the hard‑rock band Black Spiders, and Walden went on to drum for The Joydanaires.
