Afrirampo, a Japanese rock band from Osaka, was formed in 2002 by Oni (guitar, vocals) and Pikachu (drums, vocals). The duo began their musical journey with several independent releases, including the album A, during the period of 2002-2004. Their breakthrough came with extensive touring in Japan and Europe, notably with Sonic Youth, and a visit to Cameroon with the Baka pygmy tribe. In 2005, Afrirampo released their major-label debut Urusa in Japan and collaborated with Acid Mothers Temple on We're Acid Mothers Afrirampo!. Their album Baka Ga Kita (2006), recorded during their stay in Cameroon, featured a cappella chants with the Baka tribe. After a hiatus due to Oni's pregnancy, they released Suuto Breakor in 2007 and We Are Uchu No Ko in 2010 before disbanding. Afrirampo reformed in March 2016 and continued performing live, releasing their first studio album since the reunion, Afriverse, in September 2018.
