Backyard Dog, a rap duo originating from Manchester, United Kingdom, was formed by Aniff Akinola and Lloyd Hanley; Aniff Akinola served as the group's lead vocalist and songwriter, while Lloyd Hanley handled production and instrumentation. Their early collaboration began in 2000 when Aniff Akinola, after a dispute at Lloyd Hanley’s studio, coined the name “Backyard Dog” to reflect their independent spirit, and the pair released their debut single "Baddest Ruffest" in 2001, which peaked at Number 15 on the UK Singles Chart and was later adopted as the 2002 FIFA World Cup theme and featured in the films Ali G Indahouse and Bend It Like Beckham. Their chart success and cultural impact, particularly the global exposure from the World Cup association, cemented their status as influential contributors to early‑2000s British rap, with their legacy continuing to be referenced by contemporary artists and music historians.
