The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain was founded in 1985 in London by George Hinchliffe and Kitty Lux, who began the ensemble with a ukulele gift to Lux. The group’s early breakthrough came with the release of The Ukulele Variations (1988) and the single "Miss Dy-na-mi-tee" (2005), which entered the United Kingdom pop charts at Number 78. Over the next decades the orchestra issued a steady stream of albums, including The Secret of Life (2004), Precious Little (2007), and Lousy War (2016), and performed over 9,000 concerts worldwide, touring venues from the Royal Albert Hall to the Sydney Opera House. The ensemble collaborated with artists such as David Bowie, Robbie Williams, and Yusuf Islam, and appeared on BBC Radio and television programs. Notable live recordings include Anarchy in the Ukulele (2005) and the 2009 Proms concert, which was broadcast on BBC Radio 3. The orchestra remained independent, selling albums directly through its website. In 2017 Kitty Lux retired due to ill health and passed away the following year. The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain continues to influence the global resurgence of the ukulele, donating instruments to schools and conducting workshops, while maintaining a reputation for genre‑bending covers and satirical performance style.
