Midnite was an American reggae band formed in 1989 on St. Croix in the United States Virgin Islands by brothers Ron Benjamin and Vaughn Benjamin, whose father was a professional calypso, reggae and soul singer. Raised in St. Croix, the brothers grew up in a musical household and played in the local church orchestra during childhood and adolescence. Vaughn Benjamin wrote poetry and lyrics while Ron Benjamin honed his skills on bass, keyboards and production before convincing his brother to form a group that would carry the island's roots tradition into a contemporary context. Their debut album Unpolished was released in 1997; the follow-up Ras Mek Peace in 1999, recorded in Washington, D.C. with a raw, live sound, set the tone for a prolific career that would eventually see the band release close to seventy albums over three decades. The early 2000s saw a steady stream of releases—Jubilees Of Zion in 2000 and Seek Knowledge Before Vengeance in 2002, Intense Pressure in 2003, and Scheme A Things and Ainshant Maps in 2004—each reflecting the group's lyrical focus on Rastafarian philosophy, social commentary and cultural empowerment. In 2006 the band issued Jah Grid and Thru & True, followed in 2007 by Rule The Time and Infinite Quality, solidifying their reputation as a prolific reggae act. Midnite collaborated with local studios such as I Grade, Fifth Son, Rastar and Higher Bound, and produced Kings Bell (2011) in partnership with Jamaican virtuosos at Tuff Gong, bringing a blend of USVI and Jamaican roots sensibilities, with Beauty For Ashes following in 2014. Touring remained a cornerstone of the band's identity; they performed extensively around the world, often delivering concerts that lasted four to five hours. In 2015 the group evolved into Akae Beka centered around Vaughn Benjamin, debuting at Mandela Day in Denver and releasing a new catalogue of albums while Ron Benjamin focused on supporting Dezarie. The group's 25th-anniversary tour announced in January 2015 was ultimately postponed for medical reasons, but the band continued to produce recordings—Homage to The Land (2015), Portals (2016) and Living Testament (2024)—and to tour the world. Vaughn Benjamin, the band's lead vocalist, lyricist and poet, passed away in 2019 at the age of 50. Midnite's enduring influence continued on the modern roots scene in the United States Virgin Islands.
