El cantante y guitarrista canadiense Brian King y el batería David Prowse crearon Japandroids cuando eran estudiantes en el oeste de Canadá en 2006. Con una mezcla pura de indie rock e influencias de garage rock, hicieron un par de grabaciones promocionales y ganaron atención nacional con su álbum debut Post-Nothing en 2009. Realizaron numerosas giras y su segundo álbum, Celebration Rock, obtuvo una nominación a los premios Juno de Canadá como Álbum Alternativo del Año en 2012. Alegando agotamiento, callaron en 2013 para resurgir en 2017 con Near to the Wild Heart of Life. En enero de 2018 anunciaron una gira que iba a llevar su vibrante directo a festivales como Shaky Knees en Atlanta y Governors Ball en Nueva York y conciertos con los también rockeros canadienses Wolf Parade por Canadá y América, incluido un show en el Massey Hall de Toronto, grabado para un álbum en directo publicado en 2020. Siguió otro parón antes del lanzamiento de Fate & Alcohol en 2024, que los miembros anunciaron que sería su último álbum, lo que llevó a su disolución.
