Robert Ian McNabb, born November 3, 1960, in Liverpool, England, is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist whose career began in the mid-1970s with local cabaret groups such as Daybreak and City Lights, where he met drummer Chris Sharrock. His breakthrough came with the formation of The Icicle Works in 1980, serving as frontman and primary songwriter. The band released the single "Love Is a Wonderful Colour" (1983), which reached the top 20 in the UK, and later "Whisper to a Scream (Birds Fly)" (1984) in the United States. After the original lineup disbanded in 1988, McNabb launched a solo career with the 1993 album Truth and Beauty, followed by Head Like a Rock (1994), which received a Mercury Music Prize nomination, and Merseybeast (1996). He produced albums on his Fairfield label, including A Party Political Broadcast on Behalf of the Emotional Party (1998), The Gentleman Adventurer (2002), Before All of This (2005), and Eclectic Warrior (2013). His collaborations spanned Ringo Starr, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Mike Scott of The Waterboys, and the band Cold Shoulder. McNabb revived the name The Icicle Works for tours in 2006, 2011, and 2015, and released a trilogy of albums from 2017 to 2021, culminating in Utopian (2021). On October 11, 2025, he performed at the John Peel Centre for Creative Arts, presenting material from his solo albums and collaborations.
