Tonbandgerät was formed in Hamburg, Germany, in 2007 by siblings Isa Poppensieker and Sophia Poppensieker together with Ole Specht; the trio later expanded with Jakob Sudau on drums. Their early years were marked by local performances and the release of the EP Du nennst es Tetris, ich nenn es Alltag in 2009. The breakthrough came with the single "Irgendwie Anders" in 2012, followed by the debut album Heute ist für immer on 19 April 2013, which entered the German charts at number 31. In 2013 they signed with Universal and released the single "Halbmond" and "Auf drei". The second album Wenn das Feuerwerk landet was issued on 1 May 2015 and peaked at number 11, while the single "Alles geht" earned them 87 points and a fifth-place finish in the 2014 Bundesvision Song Contest. Their third studio album Zwischen all dem Lärm arrived on 7 September 2018 under Columbia (Sony), reaching number 33; the single "Beckenrand" was accompanied by a music video filmed in Athens. In 2020 the band released the EP Pixel Lametta and the single "Nenn es nicht Liebe" featuring Stefanie Heinzmann. Isa Poppensieker departed in 2022, and the group celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2022 with the EP Hellsehen and a marathon concert run at Molotow. The band continues to perform and produce new material, contributing to German indie pop with consistent chart presence and cultural outreach.
