Runner Runner was formed in Huntington Beach, California in 2008 by Ryan Ogren, Peter Munters, Jon Berry, Nick Bailey, and James Ulrich, all of whom had previously played in bands such as Over It, Rufio, and Don't Look Down. Their early releases included the tracks "Dedicate" and "The Break Up Song" in 2008, followed by the single "So Obvious" in 2010, which received radio play and a music video in June of that year. The group signed with Capitol Records and released their debut album Runner Runner in 2011. The album was followed by a tour opening for Yellowcard and Good Charlotte in June 2011.
