Formed in Los Angeles, California in 2005, Io Echo was an indie / alternative rock group founded by Greek American singer, songwriter, and musician Ioanna Gika and British musician / producer Leopold Ross (brother of Atticus Ross, best known as Trent Reznor’s musical partner). Bonded by a love of Velvet Underground, the duo released their debut single, “Doorway,” in 2009, which was followed a year later by “While You Are Sleeping.” The band’s popularity continued to grow with the release of their self-titled 2012 EP. The group – which also included guitarist Michael Edelstein and drummer Paul Rinis – played many high profile shows with artists such as Nine Inch Nails, Garbage, The Drums, Florence + the Machine, and many others. Their debut album, Ministry of Love, was issued in 2013 and was followed by the EP I’ve Been Vaping Your Tears (2014) and the singles “Crossing Over” and “Harm” (2017). The band’s commercial momentum died down and they ended up abandoning the band and pursuing separate careers.
