Garth Knox, born on October 8, 1956, in Dublin, Ireland, is an Irish violist and composer known for his work in contemporary classical music and new music. Raised in Scotland, Garth Knox began playing the viola and studied at the Royal College of Music in London with Frederick Riddle. In 1983, Pierre Boulez invited him to join the Ensemble InterContemporain in Paris. Garth Knox later became a member of the Arditti Quartet from 1990 to 1997, collaborating with prominent composers such as György Ligeti and Iannis Xenakis. He then moved to Paris, performing extensively as a soloist on both alto and viola d'amore. Notable recordings include Spectral Viola (2002) and Viola Spaces (2009).
