Sarcófago, a Brazilian extreme metal band from Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, was formed in 1985. Inspired by groups like Bathory and Celtic Frost, the band aimed to create the most aggressive music possible. Their first vinyl release was Warfare Noise I, a split album published in 1986 featuring “Recrucify”, “The Black Vomit”, and “Satanas”. The group's debut full-length album, I.N.R.I., released in July 1987, featured the iconic corpsepaint imagery that would influence the black metal genre. They signed with Cogumelo Records, a label known for signing Sepultura's first album. Subsequent releases included Rotting (1989), which sparked controversy due to its cover art, and The Laws of Scourge (1991), which marked a shift towards technical death metal. They toured South America and Europe, playing notable shows with Dirty Rotten Imbeciles in São Paulo. The band released Hate (1994), which utilized a drum machine, and their final studio album, The Worst, in 1997.
