Agrypnie began in 2004 as the solo work of Torsten Hirsch. Its music blends avant-garde black metal with elements of progressive metal, doom metal, and post-rock. Their debut release was a split demo with Fated in 2005. The first full-length album, F51.4, released in 2006 under Supreme Chaos Records, featured clinical drum sounds and explored themes of social isolation and sleep disorders. In 2008, the band released Exit, marking their transition to live drumming by René Schott. The album 16[485] followed in 2010, featuring contributions from various musicians including Phil Hertrich as a live drummer. They embarked on several tours, notably the Flammentriebe tour with Dornenreich. In 2011, they released the Asche EP, which preceded their album Aetas Cineris in 2013. The band continued to evolve with lineup changes and extensive touring, including notable performances at festivals like Summer Breeze. The seventh album, Erg, was released in 2024, following the advance release of the tracks "Aus rauchlosem Feuer" and "Blut Teil I".
