Stellar is a New Zealand pop rock band led by vocalist Boh Runga. The project began after Runga and drummer Andrew Maclaren relocated from Christchurch to Auckland in 1992, subsequently recruiting guitarist Simon McCormack and bassist Kurt Shanks to form the band in 1994. Guitarist Chris Van de Geer joined the group in 1997. They released their debut single, “What You Do (Bastard)”, in 1998, followed by their debut studio album, Mix, in 1999, which was produced by Tom Bailey. The album became the second-highest selling New Zealand album and won seven awards, including Single of the Year for the song “Violent” at the 2000 New Zealand Music Awards. The band followed with the albums Magic Line in 2001, Something Like Strangers in 2006, and the compilation album The Best of Stellar in 2010. They achieved four top ten singles in New Zealand, including “Every Girl”, which reached number 3, and “All It Takes”, which reached number 7. The band disbanded in 2010, but reunited in 2017 and toured New Zealand in 2025 to celebrate the twenty-fifth anniversary of their debut album.
