Burnt Sugar, also known as Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber, was founded in 1999 by guitarist and writer Greg Tate. The band's fluid membership included notable musicians such as Pete Cosey, Vernon Reid, Vijay Iyer, and Matana Roberts. They made their debut at CBGB and recorded their first album Blood On The Leaf that December. In 2003, Burnt Sugar released two albums: The Rites, inspired by Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps, and Black Sex Yall: Liberation & Bloody Random Violets. Their music combined influences from funk, jazz, rock, reggae, soul, hip hop, heavy metal, and 20th-century classical music. In 2004, they released their first live album, Not April in Paris, documenting an improvised concert at the Banlieues Bleues Festival in France. Throughout the years, Burnt Sugar continued to release albums such as Live from Minnegiggle Falls (2007) and All Ya Needs That Negrocity (2011).
