Peter Phillips, born October 15, 1953, in Southampton, United Kingdom, is a British choral conductor and musicologist. After studying at Winchester College, the Royal School of Church Music, and St John's College, Oxford, he founded the vocal ensemble The Tallis Scholars in 1973, a group that became a leading interpreter of Renaissance polyphony, and established the label Gimell Records in 1980. His early recordings with the ensemble, such as Allegri's Miserere (1980), launched his career and helped earn the group multiple Gramophone Awards, with wins in 1987, 1991, 1994, and 2005. He collaborated with contemporary composers, including John Tavener—who wrote works for the ensemble such as Ikon of Light and "The Lord's Prayer" (1999)—and recorded a disc dedicated to the music of Arvo Pärt in 2014. He also conducted international tours, contributed scholarly editions of early sheet music, wrote a classical music column for The Spectator starting in January 1983, and published the books English Sacred Music 1549–1649 (1991) and What We Really Do (2003).
