Charles Edmond Gaston Leveel, known professionally as Charles Level, was born on June 17, 1934, in Cherbourg, France. He started his career as a singer, debuting on the radio in 1958 and later joining Mireille's Petit Conservatoire de la chanson. With his group Les Carnaval's, he recorded covers of popular songs. Level gained prominence as a lyricist, writing for notable artists including Mireille Mathieu, Dalida, Charles Aznavour, and Marcel Amont. He contributed over 1,300 works to SACEM, including over 1,000 songs and 300 compositions for cinema and television. His most successful composition was "La Bonne du curé", performed by Annie Cordy in 1974, which sold over 3 million copies. Level also wrote the lyrics for France's entry at the Eurovision Song Contest 1984, "Autant d'amoureux que d'étoiles", performed by Annick Thoumazeau. He passed away on October 23, 2015, in Rueil-Malmaison.
