Iara Espíndola Rennó, born in São Paulo, Brazil, on March 4, 1977, is a Brazilian singer-songwriter, record producer, and poet. The daughter of journalist Carlos Rennó and singer-songwriter Alzira Espíndola, she studied letters at the University of São Paulo. She began her musical career as a backing vocalist for her mother and joined Itamar Assumpção's backup band in 1998. In 2001, she left the band to co-found the trio DonaZica alongside Andreia Dias and Anelis Assumpção, releasing the albums Composição in 2003 and Filme brasileiro in 2005. Rennó made her solo recording debut in 2008 with the concept album Macunaíma Ópera Tupi, which was dedicated to writer Mário de Andrade and featured collaborations with Tom Zé, Arrigo Barnabé, Moreno Veloso, and Siba. The album was adapted into the stage musical Toxico in 2010. She subsequently released the solo albums I A R A in 2013, as well as both Arco and Flecha as separate albums in 2016. Rennó followed with the solo albums AfrodisíacA in 2020 and Pra Te Abraçar in 2021. In 2022, she released Oríkì, a concept album dedicated to Yoruba culture that featured vocal contributions from artists including Tulipa Ruiz, Lucas Santtana, Curumin, Criolo, and Carlinhos Brown. The release was nominated for Best Portuguese Language Roots Album at the 23rd Annual Latin Grammy Awards. She followed with the solo album Orí Okàn in 2023. Rennó has also composed songs for other prominent artists, including Ney Matogrosso and Elza Soares.
