Sofaplanet was founded in 1998 in Berlin, Germany. The band consists of Sven Rathke (vocals, guitar), Jan Kertscher (drums) and Martin Gottschild (bass); founding member Jakob Großmann initially plays bass, but leaves the group in 2000. Sofaplanet play German-language rock and pop between melancholy and guitar music and emerge from the school band Shaped Waters. In 1999, they self-released their first album So viel Zukunft braucht kein Mensch (1999) and signed with X-Cell Records shortly afterwards. 2001 sees the release of the album Sternzahl unendlich (2001), which includes the single "Liebficken" (2001), which climbs to number 13 in the German charts and makes the band famous nationwide; the album also reaches chart positions. Other singles of this year are "Nie wieder" (2001) and "Kandierte Äpfel" (2001). After the departure of Großmann and line-up changes, they record a self-released EP in 2002. The album Power to the Poeble (2004) followed in 2004 with songs such as "Das Ultimative" (2004) and "Ich wäre gerne so" (2005), which were stylistically oriented towards guitar pop but did not follow on from their earlier chart successes. The band has officially been on ice since 2005; members are later also active in the Beatplanet project or pursue solo careers.
