MC 900 Ft. Jesus is the stage name of the American rapper and classically trained musician Mark Thomas Griffin, born in 1957 in Kentucky. Griffin studied the trumpet and holds an advanced degree in music from North Texas State University. Before starting his solo career, he played in the local bands The Telefones and Lithium X-Mas and worked as a trumpeter backing artists including Engelbert Humperdinck. Griffin adopted his stage name from a sermon by televangelist Oral Roberts. His recording career began with the debut studio recording Hell with the Lid Off (1990), featuring DJ Zero and the single "Truth Is Out of Style". He reached wider visibility with the studio recording Welcome to My Dream (1991), which included the single "The City Sleeps". His best-known work is the single "If I Only Had a Brain" (1994) from the studio recording One Step Ahead of the Spider (1994). The track reached number 25 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and gained exposure through a music video directed by Spike Jonze. Griffin became inactive in 2001 but resumed activity in 2017 with a sold-out concert in Dallas.
