Matthews’ Southern Comfort, a British country rock/folk rock band, was formed in 1970 by Ian Matthews, recruiting guitarist Mark Griffiths, guitarist Carl Barnwell, bassist Andy Leigh, drummer Ray Duffy and pedal‑steel player Gordon Huntley. The group issued the self‑titled debut in 1970, followed by Second Spring and Later That Same Year later that year. Their single "Woodstock" reached Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart in October 1970 and peaked at number 23 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in May 1971. After Matthews abruptly left the band in November 1970, the remaining members continued as Southern Comfort, releasing three Harvest albums before the group disbanded in 1971. Matthews pursued a solo career, released If You Saw Thro' My Eyes in 1971, and later formed Plainsong. In 2010 and 2017, he revived Matthews’ Southern Comfort, issuing Kind of New (2010), Like A Radio (2018), The New Mine (2020) and The Woodstock Album (2023).
