From 1968 to 1997, he achieved international success as a soloist and as a member of the Stuttgarter Klaviertrio. Rainer Kussmaul was a German violinist who received his musical training from his father and later studied at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Stuttgart under Ricardo Odnoposoff. His career was marked by international success as a soloist and as a member of the Stuttgarter Klaviertrio from 1968 to 1997. Kussmaul served as the first concertmaster of the Berliner Philharmoniker between 1993 and 1997 and established the Berliner Barocksolisten in 1995. His extensive discography earned him numerous accolades, including a Grammy Award in 2005 for Telemann: Sinfonia Melodica. Throughout his tenure as a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg and as a world-renowned performer, Kussmaul remained a vital figure in both the symphonic and baroque music traditions until his death in 2017.
