Helga Pilarczyk was a German operatic soprano who was born in Schöningen, Germany, in 1925. She achieved early professional recognition in 1951 after making a debut at the Staatstheater Braunschweig and is famous for her mastery of 20th-century modern music, particularly roles in twelve-tone operas. Pilarczyk was a permanent member of the Hamburg State Opera between 1954 and 1967, where she gained international acclaim as Marie in Wozzeck and the title role in Lulu. She performed at prestigious venues including Covent Garden (1958), La Scala (1963), and the Metropolitan Opera (1965). Her discography includes recordings of Arnold Schoenberg’s Erwartung (1960) and Pierrot Lunaire (1961), as well as a performance of Georges Bizet’s Carmen. After retiring from the stage in 1967, she served as a professor of singing at the Hamburg Conservatory. Pilarczyk died in Hamburg in 2011.
