Sylvia Stahlman, born on March 5, 1929 in Nashville, Tennessee, was an American soprano known for her light coloratura roles. She began her career on Broadway in 1948-49 with Kurt Weill's Love Life, opposite Nanette Fabray and directed by Elia Kazan. Stahlman then moved to Europe, debuting at La Monnaie in Brussels as Elvira in I puritani under the name Giulia Bardi in 1951. She performed extensively across Europe, including roles at the Glyndebourne Festival and the Bayreuth Festival. In America, she appeared with the New York City Opera, San Francisco Opera, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. Notable performances include Orphée aux enfers, Rigoletto, and the world premiere of Carlos Chávez's The Visitors. Stahlman is featured on recordings such as "Un ballo in maschera" opposite Birgit Nilsson and "La sonnambula" with Dame Joan Sutherland. She passed away on August 19, 1998, in St. Petersburg, Florida.
