Gerd Albrecht was a German conductor and general music director born on July 19, 1935, in Essen. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by his work in contemporary opera and for serving as the first non-Czech principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic. Albrecht achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he studied music in Kiel and Hamburg under the musician Wilhelm Brückner-Rüggeberg. He achieved professional recognition for winning the International Besançon Competition for Young Conductors at age 22 and serving as a repetiteur at the Stuttgart State Opera. Albrecht achieved professional recognition for serving as the general music director in Lübeck and holding posts at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich, and the Hamburg State Opera. His recording career included conducting the world premiere and the first commercial recording of the opera Lear (1978) by the musician Aribert Reimann. He achieved professional recognition for serving as the principal conductor of the Czech Philharmonic between 1994 and 1996 and conducting the first commercial recording of the opera Dimitrij (1989) by the composer Antonín Dvořák. Albrecht achieved professional recognition for serving as the principal conductor of the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra from 1998 to 2007 and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra from 2000 to 2004. Albrecht died on February 2, 2014.
