By Divine Right is a Canadian indie rock band formed in 1989 by high school friends José Miguel Contreras, Mark Goldstein, Liz Teear, and Steve Berman. The band released several independent albums before signing to Squirtgun Records for their 1997 album All Hail Discordia. Bassist Brendan Canning and guitarist Leslie Feist joined in 1998, contributing to the 1999 release Bless this Mess, which was supported by a Canadian and American national tour opening for The Tragically Hip. In 2003, By Divine Right became one of the few Canadian bands to perform a concert tour in China. Their album Good Morning Beautiful was released in 2001, followed by Sweet Confusion in 2004 and Mutant Message in 2009, featuring "Que Paso", Contreras' first Spanish-language track. The band's ninth album, Organized Accidents, was released in 2013. In 2016, the band released Speak and Spell U.S., a track-for-track cover of Depeche Mode's 1981 album of the same name. They later released the single "St. Leons" in 2022 as a preview of the album Otto Motto, which was issued later that year.
