Andrzej Markowski, born on August 22, 1924, in Lublin, was a Polish conductor and composer trained at Trinity College of Music in London and the Polish Higher School of Music in Warsaw under Witold Rowicki and Tadeusz Szeligowski. After directing the Breslauer Philharmonie from 1965 to 1968, he founded the International Wratislavia Cantans Festival and led its first season in 1966. He conducted works by Krzysztof Penderecki, including Utrenja, and recorded Penderecki's Jutrznia (1972) and Penderecki's Kosmogonia (1974). He received the Ministry of Culture and Art Award Second Class in 1965 and the State Award First Class in 1974 for his artistic work presented at the Warsaw Autumn Festival. He died on October 30, 1986, in Warsaw.
