For over three decades, their musicianship has moved unseen through the world’s cinemas: shaping emotion and atmosphere from just beyond the frame. Now, for the first time together, Gavin Greenaway (piano) and Caroline Dale (cello) step out from behind the screen and into clear view as Cloud Chamber, announcing their debut album Skylines. Named after the scientific instrument that renders subatomic particles visible through fleeting vapour trails, Cloud Chamber is an apt title for a duo whose careers have long traced luminous paths through other people’s musical worlds. Between them, Greenaway and Dale have performed on more than 300 film scores, collaborating with composers as diverse as Hans Zimmer, Alberto Iglesias, John Powell, Dario Marianelli, and Thomas Newman. Their artistry celebrated, but rarely in the spotlight. The first release from this new duo is a collection of “portraits without words” – stories for travellers, both physical and philosophical. Skylines is about the journey, not just the destination.
