Jonathan Aasgaard is a Norwegian cellist and conductor born in Oslo in 1974. After studying music in Norway, he moved to England to consolidate his training, and in 1999 became principal cellist of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, a position he held until 2025. A versatile musician, performing solo, chamber and orchestral music, he teaches cello at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. With a penchant for the modern repertoire, he studies and plays rare or little-known works, and enjoys confronting different styles. In 2008, he released From Jewish Life: Music for Cello and Piano, recorded with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Gerard Schwarz, and featuring works by Bloch, Diamond, Bruch and Schwarz. In 2014, he joined forces with Martin Roscoe for the complete music of Brahms for cello and piano. Since 2025, Jonathan Aasgaard has been principal cello of the Sinfonia of London, an orchestra with which he recorded the album Walton: Cello Concerto No. 1 & Scapino, conducted by John Wilson, for the Chandos label. The same year saw the release of Richard Rodney Bennett: Concerto for Orchestra - Sonnets to Orpheus - Diversions, with John Wilson conducting the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
