Eigo Kawashima, born on April 23, 1952, in Higashiōsaka, Osaka Prefecture, was a Japanese singer-songwriter. He began his musical journey as a student at Osaka Prefectural Hanazono High School, where he started singing folk songs in 1969. After graduating, Eigo Kawashima was part of the group Homo Sapiens and debuted with Kyoto Record, an indie label based in Kyoto. His debut solo album Jinrui was released in 1975. In 1976, he achieved his first major hit with the single "Sake to Namida to Otoko to Onna" ("Drinks, Tears, a Man and a Woman"), which gained nationwide recognition after being featured in a TV commercial for Kizakura, a Kyoto brewery. Eigo Kawashima's career saw several notable releases, including Jidai Okure ("Old-fashioned") in 1986, another hit single that remains popular as a karaoke choice. In 1984, he released the cover "Nofuuzo", originally composed by Hiroyuki Yamamoto. Eigo Kawashima passed away on April 16, 2001, from liver disease at a hospital in Higashiōsaka, just a week before his 49th birthday. He was buried at a Shingon Buddhist temple in Nara.
